In the artwork Vulcano Lover, two steel plates are skillfully welded together to form a flat vessel, which is then filled with water sealed and strategically lowered into the center of an active volcano. The photograph captures the artist in the process of lowering the vessel inside the volcano. As the vessel hovers above the scorching heat of the boiling lava, the trapped water begins to vaporize, creating an enormous pressure that causes the steel plates to eventually burst. The suffocating smell of sulfur, combined with the sand and grit that line every crevice of the body, creates an overwhelming and otherworldly experience. As one stands over Ertaale, they feel minuscule in the face of the mysterious and powerful natural forces at play in this environment. The work was expertly realized by the artist at the Ertaale volcano in Danakil, the land of the Afar people, located in the remote northeastern corner bordering Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Eritrea. The artwork hilights of realization.
