Memory

The work, Memory, consists of twelve glass-topped cabinets, each containing segmented cross-cuts from trees sourced from all continents. These tree discs have been exposed to different species of mushrooms for a period of over 4 years, resulting in a mosaic-like structure through the artificially controlled growth and decay of the mushroom mycelium. Memory is both a metaphor for the future fossil of the Chthulucene and the archived mycelial knowledge of a global forest. The installation oscillates between minimalist reductionary aesthetics of order and the fascinating abundance of natural patterns. As a expression of the Chthulucene, a proposed epoch that highlights the interconnectedness of all living beings and the agency of non-human actors, Memory invites viewers to contemplate the multivalent relationships of memory and experience exchange and mapping, between humanity and the environment.
